This book is primarily in Danish, but in addition to this preface two articles have been translated for the English reader. They can be found as appendix 4: I’m never late, about Coleman Hawkins , written by Arnvid Meyer and appendix 5: Ben Webster : Right Out of Kansas City – Arnvid Meyer, Ole Kongsted, Niels-Jørgen Steen, Hugo Rasmussen and Hans Nymand talk about Ben Webster. The listings found as other appendixes should also be intelligible regardless of language. Arnvid Meyers Orkester was one of the leading Danish bands, and extremely popular from 1959 to 1973. The orchestra performed extensively in Denmark (as well as in southern Sweden and Oslo, Norway). Meyer’s jazz orchestra played swing music, and the sparse public documentation of their work does not reflect their importance to the scene. Many Danes who were young in the 1960s have heard the band live at one of the numerous jazz clubs found all over the country at the time. The amount of tours and one-nighters at which the orchestra accompanied quite a few American jazz greats, is especially remarkable. A couple of records with the orchestra featuring Ben Webster have been released and reissued – also in dubious pirate versions. When searching for written material on the orchestra, one must dig deep in newspaper archives. A comprehensive written account has not previously been done. Unfortunately, several of the most essential sources of information on the period are no longer accessible. It is especially unfortunate to this account that John Darville, trombonist and more-or-less co-leader of the band, died before the author was given opportunity to interview him. We also miss Ole “Bas” Christiansen, the orchestra’s first bassist. It is fortunate that I was able to speak at length with a third cornerstone of the orchestra, drummer Hans Nymand, before his death in 2007. Naturally, comments from some of the many American soloists would have been a welcome addition. Until the 1970s, musicians held a slightly more restrictive view on private recordings than is the case today. In art circles, jazz was poorly organized, and representation was almost non-existent in copyright organizations. Back then, people actually made money performing and recording jazz music. However, agents and record companies often pocketed the earnings. Especially American musicians were wary – and probably for good reason – of being cheated. Many jazz musicians preferred not to be recorded unless compensated with cash. Despite this attitude, a surprisingly large number of recordings of Arnvid Meyers Orkester have been unearthed. Several band members owned recording equipment, and sometimes people in the audience would haul tape recorders to club concerts to make furtive recordings, which subsequently would circulate among the most enthusiastic fans. Under the auspices of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Erik Moseholm, Børge Roger Henrichsen, Pedro Biker and Birger Jørgensen – as well as Swedish Leif Andersson – frequently recorded the orchestra professionally. Unfortunately the Danish Broadcasting Corporation has saved but a fraction of the material it recorded and broadcast over the years, and Swedish Radio has saved nothing. Thus a number of important recordings are only available as private tapings of broadcasts. Them technical equipment and reception often left much to be desired. Thin tapes were used at slow speeds, and sometimes these recordings were later on transferred to cassettes. Until his death, John Darville would regularly make the long drive from Copenhagen or Lumsås to Arnvid’s home in southern Zealand. For years, they collected recordings of Arnvid Meyers Orkester. They listened to the growing mass of material, discussing what was worthwhile and what was not. Gradually, John’s hearing deteriorated and Arnvid suffered from Parkinson’s disease. To keep track of things, in 2004 I began to participate in their meetings when I had the time. The process crawled on. When, after 15 years, one of Arnvid’s many initiatives, the world’s largest jazz award, the JAZZPAR Project, was unable to find new sponsorship, I was no longer needed as manager of the JAZZPAR Project, and thus found myself with open calendar space. The organization behind the JAZZPAR Project, JazzKontakten, decided to support my work with this publication. It has been a challenge working with such a diverse and enormous mass of material. Many who could have cleared data, are unfortunately no longer with us – but several of the orchestra’s regular Danish line-up are still very much alive, and have been interviewed. People from jazz clubs and others with memories from the period are likewise represented in the book. In spite of 20 years with Parkinson’s disease, Arnvid contributed to most of the process of putting this book together until his death. He listened to all the music numerous times, and influenced greatly decisions on selection and editing. He also managed to read parts of the manuscript before his death on August 29, 2007, shortly after his 80th birthday.
